The end for the "Safari" : the kiez now without a live-sex show
Eigentlich wollte der "Safari"-Club auf der Großen Freiheit in Hamburg nach der Winterpause wieder öffnen. Am Freitag sollte es so weit sein. Und so steht es auch noch am Eingang: "Wir öffnen wieder am 14. Februar 2014 - mit neuem Programm." Doch daraus wird nichts. Die Zeiten, in denen auf der Bühne Striptease und Live-Sex zu sehen war, sind unwiederbringlich vorbei. Nach knapp 50 Jahren schließt das "Safari". Die letzte Show lief am 14. Dezember 2013. Draußen in den Schaufenstern am Eingang hängen noch die Fotos von den Erotik-Darstellern. Und die ausgestellte Getränkekarte offenbart, dass das "Herren-Gedeck" mit einer Flasche Bier und einer kleinen Flasche Sekt 30 Euro kostet. Aber drinnen sind die Stühle und Tische schon weg, ist die Bar entfernt, die Decke aufgerissen. Die Macher des Striptease-Lokals "Dollhouse" von der anderen Straßenseite übernehmen.
The "Safari"-Club on Großen Freiheit in Hamburg originally had the intention of opening again after the winter break. This appeared to still be the situation on Friday. On the door it said : "We open again on 14th. February 2014 - with a new program." Yet nothing has come of this. The times when striptease and live sex were preented on stage are irrevocably gone. After almost 50 years, the "Safari" has closed. The last show ran on 14th. Dezember 2013. Outside, in the windows by the entrance, still hang photos of the erotic performers. And the price list shows that the "Herren-Gedeck" with a glass of beer and a small bottle of sekt cost 30 euros. However inside all the tables and chairs have already been removed, along with the bar and the ceiling has been pulled down. The place is being taken over by the owners of the striptease-local "Dollhouse" on the opposite side of the road.
Das "Safari" war das deutschlandweit letzte Erotik-Kabarett. Das Ende kam für viele überraschend, war aber schon abzusehen. Die Geschäfte liefen längst nicht mehr so gut. Immer weniger Kiezbesucher waren bereit, 30 Euro (5 Euro Eintritt plus 25 Euro Mindestverzehr) für ein angestaubtes Bühnenprogramm auszugeben. Der 2013 verstorbene "Safari"-Gründer Hans-Henning Schneidereit hatte schon im Frühjahr 2009 NDR Reportern erzählt: "Ich bereite mich darauf vor, dass ich eventuell die Insolvenz anmelden muss." Die Idee, mit weniger Shows, dafür aber mit mehr Klasse, die Wende zu schaffen, fruchtete nicht. "Es ist traurig", sagt der frühere "Safari"-Mitinhaber Jeff Pierron. Bis Mitte Januar hatte er noch an dem neuen Programm gefeilt.
The Safari was the last erotic-cabaret in the whole of Deutschland. The end came as a surprise to many but could be foreseen. Business was down for quite a while. Fewer and fewer Kiez visitors were prepared to shell out 30 euros (5 euro entry plus 25 euro minimum expenditure) for a tired stage show. The founder Hans-Henning Schneidereit died in 2013 but had already stated in 2009 : "I am preparing myself for the possibility that I must declare insolvency". "The idea of reversing the trend by presenting fewer show but of higher quality came to nothing", says the former Safari" co-owner Jeff Pierron. He had been working on the new program right up until mid-January.

müssen die Brustwarzen überklebt werden, Schamhaare sind verpönt und ein
männliches Glied darf sich nicht erheben. Doch das Publikum will mehr, und bald
zeigt das "Safari" unverhohlen Live-Sex auf der Bühne. Bis zur Schließung kommen
nach "Safari"-Angaben mehr als vier Millionen Gäste.

took over the "Safari" on 1st. April 1964. He didn't hesitate to make a comparison with the erotic-theaters in Paris.
The idea was put across that you could now save yourself the trouble of travelling all the way to the Seine. The authorities followed the proceedings in the "Safari" closely: initially nipples have to remain covered, pubic hair was proscribed and the male member could not seen to be erect. Yet the public wanted more, and soon the "Safari" was showing outright live-sex on stage. According to the Safari's own figures, their visitors totalled four million over 50 years.

Der gebürtige Franzose kam 1976 zum "Safari", als Regisseur arbeitete er seitdem das Bühnenprogramm aus. Erste Bühnenerfahrungen hatte er als Komparse an der Pariser Staatsoper gesammelt. 1972 verschlug es ihn als "schüchternen, jungen Mann" nach Hamburg. Erst heuerte er im "Salambo" auf der Großen Freiheit an, wo es ebenfalls Live-Sex auf der Bühne zu sehen gab. Vier Jahre später warb ihn "Safari"-Chef Schneidereit ab. "Er kam auf mich zu und bot mir das Doppelte an Geld." Also sagte Pierron zu, zumal der Umgang mit "Salambo"Chef René Durand schwierig gewesen sei.
From the "Salambo" to "Safari"
The native Frenchmen came to the Safari in 1976 and he has worked since then as producer of the stage program. He had gained stage experience originally as an extra at the Paris State Opera. In 1972 he landed up as a "shy, young man" in Hamburg. At first he workerd at the "Salambo" on the Großen Freiheit, where likewise live-sex was presented on the stage. Four years later he was poached by "Safari"-boss Schneidereit. "He came to me and offered me double the money that I was currently receiving." Pierron agreed, especially as dealings with the "Salambo" boss René Durand had been difficult.

Die Sexnummern verpackte Pierron in kleine Theater- oder Musical-Episoden. Mal beglückte King Kong "die weiße Frau", mal erlag Biene Maja den Verführungskünsten von Willi. Aber auch - mitunter recht eigenwillige - Inszenierungen von Carmen, Phantom der Oper und der Rocky Horror Picture Show studierte Pierron mit den Sex-Darstellern ein. Manchmal dauerte es auf der Bühne eine Viertelstunde, ehe es richtig zur Sache ging. "Mitunter haben wir 45 Stunden geprobt für acht Minuten Programm", erzählt Pierron. Vier Showblöcke à anderthalb Stunden liefen am Abend, mit jeweils sieben Auftritten. Auch Striptease und Akrobatik wurden gezeigt. "Es war nicht immer einfach, Darsteller für die Nummern zu finden. Schneidereit hat nicht sonderlich gut gezahlt." 1992 gab der "Safari"-Chef immerhin 500.000 DM (256.000 Euro) für einen Umbau aus. Die ehemals winzige Bühne war fortan etwas größer.
The sex scenes were included by Pierron within small theatrical or musical episodes. Once King Kong favored "the white woman", once Biene Maja succumbed to the seduction techniques of Willi. But also Pierron and his performers rehearsed in his own way scenes from Carmen, the Phantom of the Opera and the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Sometimes it tool a full quarter of an hour before things got down to business. "Sometimes we rehearsed for 45 hours for the sake of an eight-minute program", said Pierron. Four stagings of a one and a half hour program were run every evening, each with seven scenes. Striptease and acrobatics were also shown. "It was not always esy to find performers for the scenes. Schneidereit didn't pay particularly well." In 1992 however the "Safari"-boss splashed out 500,000 DM (ca. 255,000 euro) on renovations. The formerly tiny stage became from then on somewhat larger.

"Und Oscar-Gewinnerin Cate Blanchett hat bei uns Szenen für den Film 'Wer ist Hanna?' gedreht", erinnert sich Pierron. 2000 stieg er zum Mitinhaber auf. "Bis 2008 liefen die Geschäfte eigentlich ganz gut, aber letztlich hat das Neue gefehlt."
Many famous people have found their way to the "Safari" over the decades, among them Mick Jagger, Udo Lindenberg, Curd Jürgens und Kirk Douglas. "And Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett used us for filming scenes for the film 'Hanna?'", remembers Pierron. In 2000 he became co-owner. "Until 2008 business was actually quite good but has declined recently."
Olivia Jones: Eine Ära endet
Travestie-Star Olivia Jones - selbst eine Kiez-Größe - bedauert das Ende des Erotik-Theaters: "Es gab hier mal 14 Kabaretts- mit dem 'Safari' endet eine Ära auf der Großen Freiheit. Schade." Kiez-Fotograf Günter Zint hingegen, der eng mit "Salambo"-Chef Durand befreundet war, trauert dem "Safari" nicht nach. Für ihn war es immer nur ein Abklatsch des "Salambo", das 1997 schließen musste. Auch Pierron räumt ein, dass die Konkurrenz in puncto Ambiente nicht zu übertreffen war. "Das "Salambo' hatte einen richtigen Theatersaal mit einer großen Bühne, dagegen war das 'Safari' nur eine Garage."
Olivia Jones: An era comes to an end
Tranvestite-Star Olivia Jones - herself a star of the Kiez - regrets the end of the Erotic-Theater: "There was once 14 cabarets here - with the closing of the 'Safari' ends an era on the Großen Freiheit. Pity." On the other hand, Kiez-photographer Günter Zint , who was closely acquainted with "Salambo"-boss Durand, is not so upset. For him it was only a pale imitation of the "Salambo", which had to close in 1997. And Pierron concedes that the competition at the time was not too massive. "The "Salambo' had a genuine theater hall with a large stage, while on the other hand the 'Safari' was only a garage."
Der Elefant bleibt
Nun kommt also etwas Neues. "Wir planen eine Party-Location", sagt "Dollhouse"-Geschäftsführer Christian Fong. Genaues könne er noch nicht verraten. Nur so viel: Striptease oder gar Live-Sex werde es nicht geben. Die "Safari"-Leuchtreklame mit dem Elefanten solle aber über der Straße hängenbleiben. "Wir werden wohl auch den Namen 'Safari' in irgendeiner Form beibehalten", verrät Fong. Ende April oder Anfang Mai soll Eröffnung sein.
The Elephant remains
Now something new is arriving. "We are planning a party location", says "Dollhouse"-owner Christian Fong. He could not give yet betray the exact details. Only that there will be no striptease or live-sex. The illuminated "Safari" sign with the elephant will however remain hanging above the street. "We will retain the name of 'Safari' in some form", stated Fong. The opening should be at the end of April or the beginning of May.
Pierron bleibt Hamburg treu
Pierron hat sich keine Souvenirs aus dem "Safari" mitgenommen. Keine Fotos, keine Kostüme, keine Requisiten. "Ich habe alles dagelassen. Das wäre doch ohnehin nur Ballast." Neue Pläne hat Pierron noch nicht. "Ich werde irgendetwas tun, um nicht in ein schwarzes Loch zu fallen." Auf jeden Fall will der 62-Jährige in Hamburg wohnen bleiben. Wird er sich anschauen, was aus dem "Safari" nach dem Umbau geworden ist? "Nein, sicher nicht", meint Pierron. "Oder klingeln Sie bei den Nachmietern ihrer alten Wohnung, um zu sehen, wie es nach dem Auszug dort aussieht?"
Pierron bleibt Hamburg treu
Pierron has kept no souvenirs from the "Safari". No photos, no costumes, no props. "I left everything there. Anywhere that would only be just ballast." Pierron has no new plans yet. "I will do something so as not to disappear into a black hole." In any case, the 62-year old wants to remain in Hamburg. Will he be viewing was has become of the "Safari" after its conversion? "No certainly not", says Pierron. "Or will I be going round to see the current tenant of my old flat to see what has become of it after I moved out"
